It has come to my attention that The Bay continues to operate a fur salon when it is evident that the fur industry is harmful for the environment and cruel to animals. In consideration of HBC's Global Mind "green living" mission, I urge you to continue reading and to stop selling fur.

There are many ecological problems and risks inherent in raising and killing animals on large scales for the fur industry. Fur farms contribute to land degradation as well as air and water pollution. The disposal of animal wastes, antibiotics, hormones and chemicals from such operations pollute and contaminate our environment.

Fur is not green! 50 million animals are raised and killed for the worldwide fur industry. To treat such a volume of pelts, the fur industry dumps massive amounts of raw feces, lead, cyanide, and formaldehyde into the waterways and contaminates vast areas of land where it's operations exist. The chemicals used are skin irritants and in cases like formaldehyde, carcinogens. As for energy use, it takes 20 times more energy to produce a fur coat as it does to produce synthetics.

Fur is cruel! There is nothing fashionable or elegant about how animals are killed in the fur industry. Animals on fur farms spend their entire lives confined to cramped, filthy wire cages. Fur farmers use the cheapest and cruelest killing methods available, including suffocation, electrocution, gassing, and poisoning.

Whether it comes from minks, foxes, raccoons, chinchillas, beavers, rabbits, or lynxes, fur looks best on its original owners. Consider the luxurious cruelty-free labels are readily available from leading designers, including Tommy Hilfiger, Ralph Lauren, Calvin Klein, Stella McCartney, Betsey Johnson, Marc Bouwer, Rebecca Taylor and Kenneth Cole.

Please make the green and compassionate decision today to eliminate all fur from your clothing lines as well as your stores.
